FAQs

As a beginner, how can I benefit the most from Pilates?

The key to your success is being consistent. Make sure to do a number of classes per week and not just the odd class. It is better to practice ‘little but often’ than to take a full hour class once every two weeks… which is why we filmed all the 1020 and 30 minute classes for you. The other very important key to your success is to always be patient and to always be “present” in the class- physically and mentally. Switch off your phone, remove any obstacles and distractions; listen to your body and concentrate on what you are doing; it will make for a much better workout! Motivation wise, think of the class as your reward- your treat at the beginning of the day, a break in the middle of a hectic day or your private-relaxing moment at the end of a long tiring day... Your body and mind will thank you :-)

Can I use a yoga mat for my pilates practice?

Many of our members do their practice on yoga mats, carpets, thick towels or a combination of the three. Saying that, we know that sometimes people find that rolling exercises can hurt their spine or that the side lying exercises hurt their thigh bone and they avoid proper alignment to avoid the pain. If you feel you can benefit from a thicker and softer mat, you can find some cushy and comfy Pilates Mats online with our partner Pilates-Mad.com

Could you recommend the best classes to target a firmer bottom? My target is to look good in a bikini in the summer!

I am sure that firming up for the summer is something that is on many people's

minds at the moment with the days getting warmer and the sun shining more and

I can recommend the classes and exercises below that include more concentrated gluts

sequences. Saying that, as Pilates classes always aim to be well rounded and

balanced, you might want to pause the class after the relevant sequences and

repeat them again on your own a second time (or until you feel that you have

worked sufficiently to get a little stronger every time) and then resume the

class. Don't forget to stretch well at the end of the class so that your muscles

don't get too bunched up.

Clam - Single leg extension - Leg Abduction Sequence. This is one of the

exercise clips and is a basic, yet effective sequence you can start with and

repeat daily to create good foundation for more demanding exercises

Shoulder Bridge Prep and Shoulder Bridge are 2 more exercise clips that target

the gluts and would be very good for you to do daily (or as much as possible...)

Class 084 Intermediate - 20 minutes - Anoushka Boone - Over Ball. This class

starts with a long sequence of bridges that are strong gluteal exercises.

Class 175 Advanced - 45 minutes - Anoushka Boone. This class starts and finishes

with sequences that involve squats, that are great for your legs in general.

make sure not to over do it... build up your strength gradually...

Class 150 Intermediate - 20 minutes - Amit Younger is a rounded class that

includes a number of glut exercises. Here you might want to pause and repeat as

suggested above...

Do I need to be online to watch the videos?

Yes, although Essential and Complete members also get a download allowance to watch videos offline.

Do you have any classes aimed at helping upper and lower back pains? My problem isn't chronic; it’s a pain that comes and goes.

As long as your problem is not chronic and you have not been diagnosed with a condition that stops you from exercising then I would assume that your pains are related to posture and habitual movements (how you sit, walk etc). This is very common and these kind of pains tend to go away when we start moving well and get stronger and more flexible.

I would suggest starting from the basics- the Pre-Pilates classes and the First Steps Beginners Course, and work your way from there. Take it slowly and make sure to do at least a couple of classes per week. If anything is straining your back at first then back off and do less. This way you should be getting better from week to week and should feel much better within 8-10 weeks :-)
